How to Get Ready for Roadcheck 2018

SHARE

The Commerical Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck will take place June 5 to 7, 2018. During this period, vehicle inspectors throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico will conduct inspections of commercial motor vehicles and drivers. This year’s focus will be on hours-of-service compliance.

According to the CVSA, last year more than 62,000 inspections were conducted, and 23 percent of vehicles that received Level I inspections last year were placed out of service. The top three out-of-service vehicle violations were for brake systems, cargo securement, and tires/wheels.

This year’s focus will be on hours-of-service compliance, due in large part to the implementation of the U.S. DOT’s electronic logging device (ELD) mandate.

"Annual vehicle and driver out-of-service rate remain relatively consistent (+/- 20% and 5% respectively). However, these rates tend to spike during CVSA's Annual Roadcheck event, when tens of thousands of inspections are conducted over a 72-hour period between. This year's event will focus on hours-of-service and ELD compliance," said Brad Penneau, Safety Consultant at Verizon Connect.

For hours-of-service, drivers will need to know:

  • What type of device is installed in the vehicle: Electronic Logging Device (ELD), or Automatic On-board Recording Device (AOBRD)
  • How to provide the inspector with instructions to access the device
  • How to display required and requested information
